The corn seeds I planted grew really well and produced lots of ears of corn. When they started looking ripe and I checked them this week I discovered they were full of grubs-nooo! Thankfully the grubs hadn’t gotten all the way into all the corn. I was able to cut off the tops and bottoms where the grubs were and keep the rest. Thankfully I could also cut off those bits without having to look at the grubs too much, cause that would have put me right off eating corn. I blanched the ears that were allright so we could freeze them…plus blanching meant if there were any grub eggs in them they’d be killed! We stilled managed to get a fair bit of corn. I have pulled out the corn plants now, as the remaining unripe ears were riddled with grubs. I was suprised how rich the soil still looked after all the corn that had been there...until I noticed all the earthworms in the soil. There were several worms falling off the plant roots as I tapped off the excess soil-it looked like they were living right under the plants.
We will try planting another batch of seeds and keep them sprayed for grubs this time.

Well I finally went to GOMA with Becca…the draw-a display with live finches. There were in a room with segments of wire coat-hangers entwined and hung from the ceiling. These became the perches and places to hang nests for the finches. There were several varieties there-including Gouldian Finches which I was obsessed with when younger. Becca and I were the last people in the display and had to be asked to leave, as they wanted to let in the next group ;) I really liked a display of nests they had. People had replicated different birds nests, constructing them from shredded paper money. It reminded me of the hours I used to spend trying to build bird nests in the hopes a bird would use the nest and I would get to play with the babies. My nests certainly couldn't compete with these ones-in fact I don't think any of my attempts held up for more than a few hours! There were other interesting displays-sculptures, lego constructions, shiney metals, and little polystyrene balls strung on wire to appear as though they were floating. I liked the water in the art gallery too. I wonder how the puppies would respond to indoor ponds ;)
