I'm excited. Spring is doing what it ought to! YAY! NEW GROWTH! It has probably helped that we've been fertilising everything. Shane had to fill the 1000lt water tank to put on a trailer behind the Troopie to help settle the suspension-so instead of wasting the water after that was done we loaded it with fertilisers and soil conditioners and soaked the plants. Within the week all the citrus had new growth and flower buds. All but the cumquot which reverted to root stock years ago-we expect the root stock may be a non-fruiting variety. The fruit on the lime tree are the tastiest limes EVER! So we're really hoping all the flowers become fruit. The bush is finally starting to green up a little bit too. The bulbs are flowering! Including the Bluebells which were planted years ago and have only ever produced leaves. I was very excited when I saw them. Some of the bulbs nana sent, which I planted the end of winter have already started flowering too-I went away to visit Becca for the weekend, came home and Boom! there they were. The others all have their leaves out-so fingers crossed for flowers on them too! In the vege garden we've been getting plenty of sugar snap peas, but I think these vines and the rocket plants are just about ready to be pulled out now. The asparagus has started producing spears every day-they come up so fast. I think we will get some more plants and just fill the whole bed with asparagus. We're still getting tonnes of sweet potato too-so have been giving lots away. We got a dehydrator yesterday, thinking we could make sweet potato chips. First attempt not so great-they were chewy instead of crunchy. The second attempt I soaked the sweet potato slices first to remove the starch-apparantly this makes them crisp up better. Alas, it didn't. They were still chewy. I tried out some apples, kiwi fruit and oranges next which turned out well (though better if the orange hadn't been a bitter fruit). Anyone for mulberries? The tree is loaded! To the point some of the branches are drooping to the ground. I'm going to pick all these fruit off to make a batch of jam-and then prune those branches back, as they are shading other plants. One of the blueberry shrubs is also loaded with fruit. The one getting shaded by the mulberry still has quite a lot on too. The flowers are growing well. Many have come up themselves from seed from last years plants. Just like the cherry tomatoes which come up wherever and whenever they want.
